Your complete guide to cats | Learn Cat grooming tips

We all adore cats. Jokes about becoming a “cat lady” are not uncommon these days. Cats can be mischievous. They purr to express either happiness or emotions. If you are planning to adopt a pet cat or already have one, here’s our guide to cats.

Feeding

Cats are carnivores. They get all their essential nutrient from meats, fish, etc. and should not be fed a vegetarian diet. Their body can only function well if they eat meat. A cat should be fed according to which life stage they are in. Kittens require food that are high in energy, whereas senior cats require high-quality digestible proteins. You can feed your cat wet or dry food or a mix of the two. Most cat food is labeled either kitten, adult or senior cat. Cats can moderate their own food intake but few can still overeat. They can put on weight easily, which can affect their quality of life. You should never make a change in your cat’s diet without consulting a vet. As they grow older, some cats might require a very specific diet. Freshwater must be given to cats at least once a day. Four human foods: garlic, liver, chocolate and onion must never be fed to a cat as they are poisonous for them.

Vaccinations

Cats and kittens have to be vaccinated, beginning at around eight or nine months and continuing throughout their life. The timing is important-too early, and the antibodies they receive from their mother will interfere with the immune response to the vaccine, thereby stopping it from functioning properly. Too late, kittens are left vulnerable to infection. Normally, it takes two doses of vaccines -three or four weeks apart. To maintain high levels of immunity a booster vaccine should be given one year later. There is a vaccine for cat flu which has to be given annually to your pet.

Grooming

Cats are extremely particular about their cleanliness. It’s normal to see them licking themselves. You must brush your cat’s coat regularly as it will help keep the fur in good condition, removes dirt and also helps in improving blood flow. Nails have to be clipped when they grow long and paws too, have to be cleaned whenever they get dirty. A bath is given if your cat gets dirty. For a bath, a mild shampoo must be used. It must be ensured that the cat is calm before giving a bath. Cotton should be placed in the ears to keep water out. After, the cat must be dried with a towel.

Playtime

Playtime is required for cats as exercise promotes health and happiness and also helps to maintain an ideal weight. A single hour of play extends the average lifetime of a cat by four hours. It also significantly improves the mental health of cats and decreases aggression and destructive behaviour. Behavioural problems can be a result of having no playtime. Exercise and playtime are vital in building a relationship with your pet cat.

Behaviour

What may seem like misbehaviour to us could be a normal cat behaviour. But you must look out for any changes in your cat’s behaviour since these could be a sign of stress, anxiety, aggression or pain. Any significant change in behaviour must be communicated to a vet.

There is no shortage of groomers these days. It’s up to you to decide whether you want to groom and bathe your pet at home or take them to a groomer. Here’s our guide to grooming your pet.

When should you start grooming your dog?

It’s advised to keep a puppy with its mother for at least 40 days. After you get your puppy home it’s best to start vaccinations. Two weeks after the vaccinations are complete you can take your puppy to a groomer or give them a bath at home.

How often should your dog be groomed?

The length of your pet’s hair and the type of coat they have determines how often they should be groomed. For example, a labrador has to be groomed every four weeks or once a month. You can consult your veterinarian for the same. Not bathing your pet will make them look and smell dirty while bathing them too frequently will dry out their skin. So it’s best to keep a healthy balance.

How long does grooming your pet take?

It generally takes about 2 to 3 hours for your pet to be groomed and bathed but the time frame changes depending on the size of your pet.

What products should be used on your pet?

Just like us, humans, dogs too have their own shampoos and conditioners designed for their coat. There is a particular shampoo for thick coats, dry coat, normal coat, flea shampoo and so on. It’s best to consult your veterinarian to choose a shampoo suitable for your pet.

How should your pet be dried?

If you are bathing your pet at home you can use towels specially designed for pets. If you take your pet to a grooming service they generally have driers. Since a dog’s ears are more sensitive than human make sure the groomers cover your dog’s ears.

Are there any benefits of grooming your dog?

Yes, there are multiple benefits of grooming your pet. Grooming ensures better hygiene for your pet. It helps in checking and treating fleas and ticks and promotes healthy coats. A groomer can identify any skin issues or infections.
