All You Need To Know About Catnip

The Catnip plant is a herb that contains nepetalactone, an organic compound found in the leaves and stems of catnip plants. Catnip is a curious plant that many cats seem to enjoy. It can be dried or fresh, and it’s an excellent way for your pet to have some fun in their life whilst relaxing them and providing health benefits.

Catnip can be used as a natural pesticide to keep rodents away from your garden, but it also has many other uses as well! In this blog post, we will cover everything you need to know about Catnip including how it works and what benefits it provides for cats.

  6. Conclusion

1. What Exactly Is Catnip?

Catnip, also known as cats wort and mint is a member of the Nepeta family. It has delicate pink or white flowers that can be found growing in loose branching patterns on soft stems with an earthy fragrance like no other plant out there! The leaves are often used for tea due to how much flavour they add when brewed- this herb even gets its nickname “cat’s delight” from all those who enjoy these tasty brews. Cat lovers take note: not only will your favourite feline love you more if it drinks some catnips (though we doubt anyone could get enough), but studies show us humans might too due to the Catnip plant’s ability to lower blood pressure and combat anxiety!

Catnip is often confused with Catmint, which is a different Nepeta species. Catmint has larger leaves than Catnip but both plants are used in the same ways.

Native to Europe, Asia and Africa but now found throughout North America for its pleasant smell cats wort or catnip has been used as a spice since ancient times. It was first discovered by Egyptians who would use it in their religious rituals. It is also mentioned that Cleopatra had this herb at her garden parties!

2. Can Catnip Make My Cat High?

No, catnip has no psychoactive effect on your cat whatsoever though some people may think otherwise! It’s often used as a recreational drug due to its ability to relax both humans and cats, but it must be noted that Catnip is not illegal in most places. The only difference between Catnip and marijuana or other drugs is Catnip does not make you high like change to as those other plants do.

The scent of Catnip can be described as pungent with a strong, musky smell that cats seem to really enjoy the most (and some humans too). Cat’s react differently when exposed to Catnip depending on their age, gender, and health status.

3. Why Do Cats Love Catnip So Much?

All cats have a special gene that is responsible for detecting the scent of Catnip and reacting to it. It’s even more likely they will go crazy for this herb if their ancestors were from wilder areas where Catnip grows! In fact, most domesticated or house kitties are not as sensitive to Catnip as those who live outside in the wilderness due to breeding over time.

Pheromones are chemicals that trigger an attractant response in cats. If you give your cat some catnip, they will be irresistibly drawn towards it and want more because of these powerful pheremone effects! Pheromones are powerful and drastically affect the behavior of living organisms. Because cats can’t help but react with an attractant pheromone when they come into contact with catnip, it’s no wonder these two things go hand in paw!

Catnip can also be used as a natural pesticide around your garden because it deters rodents such as moles and mice- which means you get two benefits with one plant! Cats love cat nips so much because Catnip acts on receptors found mostly in a cat’s brain but while Catnip is safe for cats, there are some things to keep in mind while you’re both you both are enjoying this herb. For example:

Catnip can make your cat hyperactive if they eat too much overeat of it. So, be sure not to give them more than a small amount at once!

Cat’s who have been spayed or neutered will usually react less strongly when exposed to Catnip since their sex drive has already been reduced by the surgery. This means that male cats may still get excited about Catnip even after having the procedure done because their sexual desires remain intact.

4. Benefits Of Catnip

  • Catnip is a fun herb for humans and cats alike! It’s safe to use around your furry friends since it doesn’t pose any danger.
  • Catnip also stimulates the appetite in felines, which means you can give this as a treat before mealtime too if they’re not interested in their food!
  • Catnip can also be used as a natural pesticide around your garden since it’s been found to deter mice and other small rodents from destroying plants.
  • Catnip can help reduce inflammation or swelling when applied topically to the skin.
  • Catnip is also thought to be an effective treatment for fevers, headaches and other minor aches in cats.

When Catnip is ingested by cats, they have an intense reaction that usually lasts for ten minutes before their senses return to normal again–and after the initial exposure ends, cats will usually act normally for about ten minutes before they return to Catnip again. Cats can also experience this reaction multiple times in one day so plan accordingly!

5. What Type Of Catnip Is The Best?

There are different Catnip products sold in pet stores these days, which means there is a Catnip product for every cat! Cats who don’t react to Catnip at all may enjoy the pouches of dried Catnips that you can sprinkle on their toys or scratching posts instead.

Cats who go crazy for Catnip might prefer Catnip toys that are stuffed with dried Catnips or Catnip-infused fabric for them to play with. They’ll love the way it feels in their mouth and paws!

Cat’s who just want a little taste of Catnip without all the fuss will enjoy Catmint sprays because they can smell Catnip without eating it. Catmint sprays are perfect for cats who have to be on a special diet or avoid Catnips because of allergies!

Catnip spray is also great for older cats who may not be as interested in Cat Nips anymore because of age. Catmint sprays can even be used to keep rodents away from your garden and yard, which means you won’t have to worry about them eating up all your plants while Cat’s are around!

6. Conclusion

Catnip is a fun herb for humans and cats alike! Cats seem to love Catnips so much because Catnip acts on receptors found mostly in their brains. It also induces an irresistibly attractive pheromone effect that causes them to play with it like crazy when they come into contact with the herb.

Remember to ask a veterinarian before giving catnip to your cat. Cats who are sick or pregnant should not be given Catnip either.

Foods You Should Never Feed Your Cat

Foods You Should Never Feed Your Cat

Despite your cat’s complaints, treats and snacks are not an essential part of their diet. But if you still want to treat your cat, the Clinical Nutrition Department says several foods are generally considered safe for cats, as long as they make up no more than 10 percent of the daily intake of a cat.

However, the Clinical Nutrition Service also warns that cats should be considered for their individual needs, as some cats may consume a particular food without a problem and another cat may consume the same product and develop vomiting, diarrhea, or other unwanted signs.

Table of Contents

  1. Onions and Garlic
  2. Raw Eggs, Raw Meat & Bones
  3. Chocolate and Caffeinated Drinks
  4. Alcohol and Raw Dough
  5. Milk and Dairy Products
  6. Grapes and Raisins
  7. Dog Food
  8. Preventing Cats from Eating Dangerous Foods
  9. Conclusion

1. Onions and Garlic

Cats are considered to be twice as sensitive as dogs to the toxic components of allium found in onions and garlic, which can damage red blood cells even if a cat consumes only a small amount.

2. Raw Eggs, Raw Meat & Bones

Raw eggs might be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. Signs of infection include vomiting and fever. Raw eggs also contain avidin, an enzyme that prevents cats from absorbing biotin, a vitamin important for healthy skin and coat.  Raw or undercooked meat is similar to eggs. It can be contaminated with E.coli and Salmonella bacteria. The clinical nutrition department says it often sees gastrointestinal signs (usually diarrhea) in animals that consume raw meat.

3. Chocolate and Caffeinated Drinks

Chocolate contains substances called methylxanthines specifically, caffeine and theobromine. These substances are toxic to cats and can cause vomiting, seizures, tremors, and death. Methylxanthines concentration varies among different types of chocolate. White chocolate is the least dangerous, while cocoa powder is the most dangerous. Caffeinated drinks like chocolate, contain methylxanthine caffeine and therefore can have the same effects listed above.

4. Alcohol and Raw Dough

Alcohol-containing foods and drinks can cause serious problems in cats, including breathing difficulties, diarrhea, coma, and death. Yeast dough can rise and cause gas to build up in your cat’s digestive system. This can lead to stomach twisting and bloating, which is a potentially life-threatening condition. In addition, yeast produces alcohol as a by-product, which causes several problems.

5. Milk and Dairy Products

Cats are unable to properly digest dairy products like milk, yogurt, or cheese.  The safest approach is to avoid them altogether, but you can ask your vet for a lactose-free alternative as an acceptable treatment.

6. Grapes and Raisins

The exact reason behind the toxic effects of  grapes and raisins on cats is unknown. There is some evidence that feeding cats grapes and raisins can lead to kidney failure.

7. Dog Food

While there are a few canned formulas available that meet the needs of both species, most foods are specifically for cats or dogs.

Cats need a higher percentage of protein and fat than most dogs and have some extra taurine needs. Dogs that eat a lot of cat food are at risk of weight gain and even pancreatitis. Cats that eat dog food are at risk of gaining weight when food is high in carbohydrates.

8. Preventing Cats from Eating Dangerous Foods

Take care of your cat’s food and give the food that is specially made write specifically available  for cats. And keep an eye on your cat, what she is eating and prevent them from eating dangerous foods.

9.Conclusion

Don’t give your cat the above-mentioned foods. It is always a good idea to speak to your veterinarian before adding any new foods to your pet’s diet, even those that are generally considered safe.

History:

The Chartreux is a French breed that is said to have originated in the 18th century or earlier. Carthusian priests are said to have breeds of cats, according to one legend. They undoubtedly helped in the control of mice and rats in the churches. Their furs were equally popular among people. In 1931, Chartreux made their debut in cat society at a European cat show. The first Chartreux was imported to the United States in 1970. In 1987, the Cat Fanciers Association officially recognised the breed. A Chartreux is seen in the painting “Magdaleine Pinceloup de la Grange” in 1747, where the cat is represented as a pet, which is rare for that era in France. After World War I, the breed was on the verge of extinction; it was only due to the efforts of breeders that these cats were preserved.

Diet:

The Chartreux cat requires a diet that is heavy in high-quality animal protein. Because this breed of cat has a sensitive stomach, it’s important to stay away from plant-based protein sources. You should also avoid giving it particularly rich meals, as this might make it unwell. Hot meals and frequent dietary changes should be avoided.  Because premium kitten meals can be high in fat, switching to adult foods at the age of 4 to 5 months is recommended. Your cat’s food consumption to avoid becoming overweight. Give them raw fish, poultry, and meat, as well as other typical cat meals, although a lactic diet is best avoided. Also, make sure your cat has constant access to fresh drinking water.

Dry Cat Food

Personality type:

  • The Chartreux is a friendly, sweet-natured cat to own who would constantly strive to please and accompany its owner.
  • Like many other breeds, it is loving but never aggressive or sniffy.
  • They are naturally calm and non-aggressive, and can sit peacefully for hours without uttering a single ‘purr’ or ‘meow.’ A few of them are even totally silent.
  • They’d chirp instead than mewl at items that caught their attention.
  • Their puppy behaviour is well-known.
  • They are keen observers and might learn to collect balls and other small items, turn on or off the radio, and unlock screen door locks.
  • When their names were announced, the majority of them would react.
  • The Chartreux is primarily a one-person cat, following its preferred human from room to room.
  • They are, nevertheless, devoted to and fond of the rest of the family.
  • They get along well with youngsters and other family pets.
  • They are jovial and like traveling. It takes around two years for this breed to reach full maturity.

Interesting Facts:

    • Because of their quick reactions, these lap cats are great hunters and are hence highly appreciated by farmers.
    • Chartreux was owned by French president Charles de Gaulle, French author Colette, and French poet and writer Charles Baudelaire.
    • Because these cats are so uncommon, there are only around two dozen active Chartreux cat breeders in North America as of 2007.
    • The cat’s eye color varies from gold to copper, with the latter being more popular among breeders.
    • They’ve been described as “sweet potato on toothpicks” because of this predilection.
    • The character ‘Smokey the Alley cat’ in the 1999 film ‘Stuart Little’ was a Chartreux.
    • Don’t be fooled by Chartreux’s charming personality; he’s a superb escape artist who can trick cabinet doors and shutters windows.
    • Their hair is truly water-resistant. If they go into a body of water, they may nearly fully dry off, similar to a Labrador Retriever.
    • These cats have lightning-fast reflexes, so it’s difficult to imagine one that can react even faster.
    • Their movement is so quick that they’ve already carried out whatever plan they had in mind before you ever know what’s going on.

How to Choose the Right Food for Your Cat

How to Choose the Right Food for Your Cat

Podcast | Kiara – How to Choose the Right Food for Your Cat

Cats, like any other pet, need a healthy diet filled with all the vitamins and minerals their bodies require to be their best selves. However, each cat is a little bit different, and sometimes, what works for one cat will not work for others. This begs the question, which cat food is the right choice?

Table of Contents

    1. Choosing The Healthiest Cat Food
    2. Consider Grains
    3. Try Canned or Dry Food
    4. Research Your Cat Food Brand

1. Choosing The Healthiest Cat Food

Your best bet in choosing the healthiest cat food is to first get your cat tested for any food sensitives or allergies that they may have. From there, you’ll want to search for cat foods that have simple, all-natural, healthy ingredients that your cat needs! Keep in mind that some cat species need different nutrients, so be sure to first talk to your vet and maybe even get their recommendation.

2. Consider Grains

Grains can be hit or misspending the age of your cat and your cat’s personal digestion. Whereas some cats have no problem digesting grains, others do. You’ll need to test this out first by giving your cat a type of food with and without grains and seeing if either one results in a poor reaction from your cat. If nothing happens, either way, your cat is in the clear.

3.Try Canned or Dry Food

Some cats respond better (or just prefer) dry food over wet food and vice versa. The best way to test this out is by giving your cat both and seeing which one your cat seems to prefer. You’ll know which one the winner is based on how much is left in the bowl, how long it took for your cat to eat it, and even by seeing how your cat responds to getting a different one.

4. Research Your Cat Food Brand
