1. Pets require your constant attention or else…

Pets are mainly kept for companionship and just like a lover gets irked when you don’t give them your attention, so do pets dislike it. Pets can get very grumpy and troublesome once they feel you are not being affectionate towards them and recognising their presence. They then become melodramatic and resort to all kinds of destructive behaviour to attract your attention. Once you are a pet parent, you have to figure out a way of giving your pet the attention it needs while still getting the time to do your other work.

2. Separation anxiety is a real problem

While giving your pet attention is critical, you still need to work and attend to other obligations in your life whether social or economic. At such times, leaving your pet alone is unavoidable. This poses a problem as pets tend to develop separation anxiety and so as a parent you have to teach them how to get by in your absence. Therefore, it is important to strike the delicate balance of giving them your attention but also ensuring they don’t panic when you leave them.

3. Training is hectic and demanding

Training is a process that cannot be neglected by a new pet parent. It essentially involves teaching your pet the rules of living in your home. Training is essential to minimizing the destruction and havoc that a pet can cause if they are bound by no rules. While a trained pet is much easier to deal with and live with, the training process itself is very tiresome and hectic. Pets require repetition and consistency to master things and so you really have to spend a lot of time and effort on training your pets.

4. Treats are essential for reinforcing good behavior

Pets are always up to mischief of some sort which makes them very exasperating to have around. Whenever they are not busy destroying something they are busy messing up the place with their poop or urine. Rebuking them whenever they do something wrong passes the message but pets require rewards when they do the right thing. This way, they learn to associate certain deeds with dog treats and in a bid to win themselves more rewards, they become well-behaved.

5. Pets are prone to injuries often

Due to their hyperactivity and excited nature, pets love playing all manner of games and engaging in physical theatrics. This hyperactivity exposes them to injury and it is common to come home and find your pet limping, bleeding, or even choking. This makes it very critical to have a pet first aid box and some basic knowledge of administering first aid to pets before you seek a vet’s help.

6. Pets require consistent routines

While they may not have watches and clocks on which to check the time, pets have a very good sense of routine. Whether it’s in terms of their mealtimes, play dates, sleep, or cleaning, pets learn to associate certain times with specific activities and they get upset and jumpy when this routine is not adhered to. Therefore, it’s important to stick to schedules to avoid confusing your pet. Following a routine also helps you to get the time to do your own work aside from attending to your pet.

7. Pet parents have to cover several pet expenses

Keeping a pet is not all about rubbing their back, cuddling, and playing with them. For pets to live comfortably and be healthy at your place, you have to cater for various expenses. Pet parents have to spend money on vaccination and treatment, pet treats and toys, appropriate nutrition, and other recurrent expenditures associated with keeping pets. Therefore, pet parents have to organise their finances well to adequately provide for the pet while catering to their financial obligations.

Despite all these challenges, having a pet you love remains to be one of the most fulfilling things ever. Therefore, you need not be intimidated by the challenges faced by pet owners but rather just buckle up and enjoy the ride.
