How to Stop a Puppy (or Adult Dog) From Inappropriate Chewing

How to Stop a Puppy (or Adult Dog) From Inappropriate Chewing

Podcast | Kiara – How to Stop a Puppy (or Adult Dog) From Inappropriate Chewing

Is your puppy or dog getting into things they shouldn’t be? Are they leaving chew marks, bite marks, or even tears on the furniture? There are numerous reasons for this behavior and the reason affects the treatment. Don’t fret though, there’s hope! There are several ways to stop a puppy or adult dog from inappropriate chewing.

Table of Contents

  1. Understand your dog
  2. Give Your Dog A Chew Toy
  3. Use Bad-Tasting Repellents and Sprays
  4. Give Your Dog Plenty of Exercises
  5. Obedience Training
  6. Be Patient and Realistic

1. Understand your dog

The first step in stopping your puppy or dog from inappropriate chewing is understanding the reason for the behaviour. The most common reason for excessive chewing is:

  • Attention seeking
  • Boredom
  • Teething
  • Toothaches

Once you determine the reason, you can help phase your pup out of this phase using the following methods.

2. Give Your Dog A Chew Toy

Dogs and puppies are genetically geared towards needing to chew on things. It’s an innate behaviour that every puppy pal comes with, so it’s inevitable that they’ll start choosing things. In order to prevent them from chewing on things you do not want them to, be sure they have other options like chew toys lying around the house! You may have to test a few out to see what kind your dog prefers (hard, plush, noisy, flavored, etc.).

3. Use Bad-Tasting Repellents and Sprays

Visit your local pet store for pet-safe sprays and repellents that you can spray on the objects you want them to stay away from. The smell or taste will deter the behaviour, but the desire for the behavior will remain so you’ll have provided them with an alternative.

4. Give Your Dog Plenty of Exercises

A primary reason for inappropriate chewing is actually boredom and/or seeking your attention. If you notice an increase in frequency in this behavior, it’s best to first look at how their or your life has changed recently. It’s likely that they aren’t getting enough exercise to keep them entertained and boredom-free. Make sure you’re getting your dog out of the house twice daily and playing with them inside as well. This should decrease the chewing behavior as they’ll be less bored, and they’ll be getting the attention they seek from you.

5. Obedience Training

If all else fails, you can always take your puppy or adult dog to an obedience school. There are schools that allow you to drop your dog off and pick them up several times per week, stay for a whole week, or even do daily training where you can stay and observe. These training consist of sessions where the trainers will present chewing options and work through the inappropriate behaviour with your dog so that the behaviour decreases at home.

6. Be Patient and Realistic

This behaviour is a hard one for any animal to beat, especially if it has been going on for an extended amount of time. You’ll need to be patient and accept that the behaviour won’t go away overnight just because you got them a new toy. Your pet needs to accept that they have other options and that they are getting what they need from you every day. Over time the behaviour will decrease!

Training a new pup or adult dog can be a difficult task, especially when it comes to inappropriate chewing. So long as you are patient with them and ensure you are providing them with the appropriate amount of exercise and attention, as well as some alternative chew toys, you should see the behaviour go down! If you don’t, consider obedience school or having a trainer come to your house. The behaviour is a tough one, but it’s absolutely attainable to overcome!

How to Choose the Right Food for Your Cat

How to Choose the Right Food for Your Cat

Podcast | Kiara – How to Choose the Right Food for Your Cat

Cats, like any other pet, need a healthy diet filled with all the vitamins and minerals their bodies require to be their best selves. However, each cat is a little bit different, and sometimes, what works for one cat will not work for others. This begs the question, which cat food is the right choice?

Table of Contents

    1. Choosing The Healthiest Cat Food
    2. Consider Grains
    3. Try Canned or Dry Food
    4. Research Your Cat Food Brand

1. Choosing The Healthiest Cat Food

Your best bet in choosing the healthiest cat food is to first get your cat tested for any food sensitives or allergies that they may have. From there, you’ll want to search for cat foods that have simple, all-natural, healthy ingredients that your cat needs! Keep in mind that some cat species need different nutrients, so be sure to first talk to your vet and maybe even get their recommendation.

2. Consider Grains

Grains can be hit or misspending the age of your cat and your cat’s personal digestion. Whereas some cats have no problem digesting grains, others do. You’ll need to test this out first by giving your cat a type of food with and without grains and seeing if either one results in a poor reaction from your cat. If nothing happens, either way, your cat is in the clear.

3.Try Canned or Dry Food

Some cats respond better (or just prefer) dry food over wet food and vice versa. The best way to test this out is by giving your cat both and seeing which one your cat seems to prefer. You’ll know which one the winner is based on how much is left in the bowl, how long it took for your cat to eat it, and even by seeing how your cat responds to getting a different one.

4. Research Your Cat Food Brand

You want to give your cat the healthiest option, but in order to do that, you have to know what’s in the brand of food you’re giving your cat! Check out the following brands of cat food as they are known for their healthy nutrients and delicious cat-loving flavors!

Helpful Cat Training Tips for Beginners

Helpful Cat Training Tips for Beginners

Podcast | Kiara – Helpful Cat Training Tips for Beginners

So, you have a new little member of the family, and likely a very active playful one! Are they knocking stuff off of your counters and tearing holes in the furniture? It might be time to start cat training, whether they are kittens or grown adults. Training cats can be a little bit trickier than training a dog as cats are very independent creatures and prefer to do things their own way. However, there are some training tips that beginners can take advantage of to keep your cat on your good side and off your countertops!

Table of Contents

  1. Teaching your kitten to sit on command
  2. Teaching your kitten to use the bed/crate
  3. Developing socialization skills
  4. Teaching safe playing techniques
  5. Proper feeding etiquette
  6. Training a kitten to recognize their name
  7. Training a cat to use the toilet
  8. Get your cat some fun toys

1. Teaching your kitten to sit on command

Teaching your cat to sit is very similar to teaching a dog. You have to find your cat’s highest motivator (usually a treat of some kind) and physically push their backside down onto the floor. Immediately upon doing so, give them the cat treat! You’ll then fade that to independence.

2. Teaching your kitten to use the bed/crate

Kittens like to sleep wherever they feel safest, so teaching them that the bed/crate is where they belong can take some work. Some helpful tips for this process include:

  • Easing them into it by requiring them to stay in the crate or on the bed for a period of time (30 seconds to start and then increase)
  • Reinforcing that the bed/crate is a good thing by having a treat waiting in it for them
  • Giving them praise and pets anytime you see them in the bed/crate even if it’s not during a training session
  • Having their favourite toys in the bed/crate
  • Keeping the crate covered with a blanket and making it cozy (cats like to be surrounded and comfy).

3. Developing socialization skills

If you have anti-social cats, your best bet is to ease them into socialization. You can do this by only having them be held for short periods of time, so they get used to it. You can also just be around your cat even if you aren’t interacting with them. This gets them used to people being there and having to be okay with that.

4. Teaching safe playing techniques

This comes down to simply rewarding the good behavior when they play in a safe manner is discouraging the behavior that comes with unsafe playing. For cats, the most effective form of punishment for unsafe behavior is spraying them with a squirt bottle or removing the toy altogether.

5. Proper feeding etiquette

Using cat bowls designed for proper eating can help reinforce proper behavior. If that’s not an option, make sure you have a designated eating spot and reinforce how you want your cat to eat by observing and giving them pets and a treat when they eat correctly.

6. Training a kitten to recognize their name

The easiest way is to overuse their name. Always say it to them and teach them to respond to it by standing/sitting 6 inches in front of them and say their name. When they respond, they get a treat or a toy or pet. Move your distance over time.

7. Training a cat to use the toilet

You’ll need to get crafty here and set up a “litter box” on top of your toilet to start that your cat will use. From there, you’ll remove the litter, and then slowly cut holes so that your cat voids into the toilet. You’ll then remove the litter box entirely and reward your cat with treats or pets each time they go in the toilet!

8. Get your cat some fun toys

A bonus tip for your cat-lovers is to purchase fun, unique toys that your cat will enjoy, and you can use as a reinforcer for training! Consider cat toys that they can chase or pounce on!

Training your cat is no easy feat, but it is absolutely attainable if you are patient, use lots of reinforcement, and remind yourself that cats are stubborn creatures and need you to be consistent! With these tips, you’re sure to have a happy trained kitty in no time!
